Toru Iwantani, a developer who worked for the Japanese company Namco at the time, is credited with being the first person to create Pac-Man. The young man, who was 25 years old at the time, wanted to develop a brand-new video game that was distinctive in a significant way.

He claims that back in those days, the majority of video games featured violent plots that centered on the elimination of aliens. Iwatani made the decision to design a game that is appealing to both genders despite the fact that he is aware that men are more likely to enjoy them than women.

While he was munching on pizza, he came up with the idea for the main character in the Pacman video game. After removing the first slice from a pizza pie, he observed that what was still present resembled the shape of a head with its mouth open. He found inspiration in the shape, and decided to base the yellow character in Pac-Man on it.

First of all, Pac-Man was originally known as PuckMan. This name was derived from the onomatopoeic phrase "paku paku," which is used to describe the sound of someone eating. After a judge in the United States deemed the original name to be offensive, it was eventually changed to Pac-Man.

After what seemed like countless hours of testing and polishing, Pac-Man was finally brought to life and released to the public on May 22, 1980. The game's look and design were inspired by anime and manga from Japan.
