Introduction

"Kashmir ki vadiyon mein phool child hain, Gulzar Sahab, jannat ki tasveer hai yeh'', and indeed, nestled in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of nature's best masterpieces or 'tasveer' (picture), the Kashmir Great Lakes. Located at an altitude of 4200 metres, is a cluster of the most stunning seven alpine Lakes which are a part of the itinerary for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. Turquoise waters shining brightly like a gemstone and the solitude found in the nearby valleys are worth every penny. Spanning over a period of 7-8 days, travellers cover approximately 72kms, it is one of the most popular treks in North India for people who are on the lookout for a new exhilarating adventure. That being said, it is recommended that trekkers maintain a certain fitness regime to be able to withstand high-altitude conditions.

The Seven Great Lakes: Nature's Exquisite Opus

Ensure that you carry your cameras with you because each of these Lakes offer views that are so distinct from each other but equally mesmerising. The first lake that you will come across is the Vishansar Lake which is enclosed within 4 mountain peaks and picturesque meadows. As the day progresses, the water reflects multiple shades of aquamarine blue and emerald green giving it a breathtaking appearance. At a distance of 1 km is the Krishansar Lake, also known as the black diamond because of its dark blue waters and offers stunning visuals. The Gadsar lake is also known as the 'Lake of Fishes' because of the abundant trout fishes swimming in the waters and also the 'Lake of Flowers' because the nearby meadows are full of Iris flowers of varying shades. It is also a place of interest for bird watchers. The Yamsar lake joins with this river through a narrow stream. About 7 smaller lakes come together to form the Satsar Lake. The absolute bliss felt here can be attributed to the backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan ranges and the lush meadows in the vicinity. Twin Lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol lakes are a sight to behold! The pristine bluish green waters hold special meaning for the Hindu pandits in Kashmir and the colossal Harmukh Peak towers over the Lakes offer a spectacular setting. The Himalayan Blue Poppies and Indian Blue Primrose among other alpine flowers make this region a picture perfect location.

The picturesque and charming valleys along the

way are absolutely delightful.Initially, you will arrive at the Shekdur Valley which is surrounded by Bhoj trees and gushing rivers. The Vishansar Valley is full of settlements of the Gujjar and Bakarwal communities who are incredibly hospitable and from here, one can witness the snow-capped mountains, a treat for the sore eyes. The Naranag Valley is known for its Temple ruins which have become sites of religious significance and architectural wonder. The other valleys such as Satsar and Gangabal provide a striking contrast between two of nature's best landforms- the snow-capped mountain peaks and the azure waters of the lakes. The melting glaciers lend an enchanting element to the pristine waters which altogether create magical vistas.

Apart from these two predominant features, the lush green meadows, sometimes filled with blooming flora as well as the dense alpine woodlands consisting of Oak, Maple and Silver birch trees are very photographer's dream.

Roads Towards the Lake

The Meadow of Gold, Sonamarg is the gateway to this out of world trek. From the summer capital of Srinagar, buses are available to the base camp location, Shitkadi. You could either reach Srinagar by air (Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport) or by rail ( Jammu railway station and Udhampur railway station). The following day, a 9 km trek to Nichnai begins.Spectacular views of the Amarnath peak and Thajiwas range, Tabletop meadow and the string of Maple, Pine and Silver Birch trees are incredible. The next stop on the road is the Vishanar Valley. To reach this place, one would have to start with a steep ascent but after that, the roaring waterfalls , meadows full of wildflowers and of course the twin lakes of Vishansar and Krishansar with their aquamarine waters make it worth the effort. The Gadsar Valley, at the foothills of snow-covered mountains, is the destination for day 4. The journey includes the most challenging stretch of this trek- the tricky Gadsar Pass which requires some amount of experience to traverse. Satsaran campsite with its small glacial pools nearby is popular among tourists who rest here to regain their energy the following day. After crossing the Zajibal Pass on day 6, the scenic Gangabal Valley with the twin lakes is visible after which the last day is reserved for a trip to the Naranag Valley through the lush meadows of Trunkhol and the Butsheri top.
