From Rural Fields to High-Flying Dreams: Why We Choose Dibbur, Chikkaballapur for Aeromodelling Workshop?

Our choice of conducting the aeromodelling workshop at a Government High School in Dibbur, Chikkaballapur, located 50 km away from the north of Bangalore, was driven by the desire to empower students in rural areas with aeromodelling education. Recognizing their limited exposure to aeromodelling and prevalent misconceptions about its cost and necessity, we aimed to bridge the knowledge gap and ignite curiosity among these young minds. By providing hands-on experience in building and flying RC aircraft, we aimed to demonstrate that aviation can be accessible and affordable. Moreover, we sought to show the relevance of aviation in various industries, nurturing the understanding that it is an essential field with numerous career opportunities. Through this workshop, we not only aimed to break barriers but also to empower the students with STEM education, fostering critical thinking and creativity. Our goal was to leave a lasting impact, inspiring future aeromodellers and enthusiasts in rural areas to soar beyond limitations, embracing a world of knowledge and innovation.

Unlocking Flight Secrets with Thrilling Theory Sessions of Aeromodelling RC Aircraft Workshop:

At our RC plane workshop, the theory session on the principles of flight and aeromodelling commenced at 10:00 AM and continued until 11:30 AM. Engaging the young minds, we embarked on a journey to explore the fascinating world of aeromodelling.

Aeromodelling and Its Types:

Aeromodelling is the art and science of designing, building, and flying miniature aircraft models. It encompasses various types of models, such as free flight, control line, and radio-controlled (RC) models.

Flight and Different Types of Flight:

Flight is the process of moving through the air. There are four primary types of flight:

(a) Fixed-wing flight, where aircraft generate lift through wings,

(b) Rotary-wing flight, which involves helicopters and auto gyros using rotating blades for lift,

(c) Glider flight, where aircraft sustain flight without an engine, and

(d) Vertical flight, exhibited by VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) aircraft like some drones and military jets.

Main Parts of Aircraft:

The main parts of an aircraft include the fuselage (body), wings, empennage (tail section), and landing gear. The fuselage houses the crew and passengers, while the wing provides lift and support. The empennage comprises horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and the landing gear helps with takeoff and landing. The propulsion system typically consists of engines or motors that generate thrust for forward motion.

Aerodynamics and Its Force:

Aerodynamics is the study of how air interacts with moving objects, such as aircraft. The main aerodynamic forces are lift, weight (or gravity), thrust, and drag. Lift is generated by the wings and opposes weight, allowing an aircraft to stay airborne. Thrust, usually from engines or propellers, propels the aircraft forward, overcoming drag, which is the resistance caused by air friction.

Bernoulli's Principle:

Bernoulli's Principle states that as the speed of a fluid (such as air) increases, its pressure decreases, and vice versa. It explains how the shape of an airfoil (wing) causes the air above it to move faster, resulting in lower pressure compared to the air beneath, creating lift.

Airfoil and Its Terminologies:

An airfoil is the cross-sectional shape of a wing or blade that generates lift when moving through the air. Some essential airfoil terminologies include the leading edge (front), trailing edge (rear), chord line (straight line from leading to trailing edge), camber (curvature of the airfoil), and angle of attack (angle between the chord line and the relative wind).

Aircraft Terminologies:

In the context of aeromodelling, aircraft terminologies include pitch (nose-up or nose-down movement), roll (side-to-side movement), yaw (rotation around the vertical axis), bank (angle of aircraft about the horizon), and attitude (orientation of the aircraft in three-dimensional space).

Control Surfaces of Aircraft:

Aircraft have control surfaces that allow pilots to maneuver the plane. The primary control surfaces are the elevator (controls pitch), ailerons (control roll), and rudder (controls yaw). These surfaces work by altering the aerodynamic forces on the aircraft.

Material Selection:

Choosing suitable materials is crucial in aeromodelling. Common materials include balsa wood, foam, carbon fiber, fiberglass, and various types of adhesives. The choice of materials depends on weight, strength, durability, and ease of construction.

History and World Records of RC Aircraft:

Radio-controlled (RC) aircraft have a rich history dating back to the mid-20th century. Over the years, enthusiasts have set numerous world records, including the longest flight time, highest altitude reached, and fastest RC aircraft speed.

Basic Electronics:

Aeromodelling often involves basic electronics knowledge, particularly related to RC aircraft. Participants need to understand concepts such as batteries, motors, servos, transmitters, and receivers, which are essential components of an RC aircraft's control and power systems.
