Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game in which the player takes control of Boyfriend, who must overcome a series of obstacles in order to continue dating his significant other, Girlfriend. The player must progress through multiple levels, dubbed "weeks," each of which contains three songs. Each week, the player faces a new opponent, though some variations include multiple opponents. Throughout the game, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented by arrows), which the player must duplicate using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Certain songs introduce more complicated patterns, with the player's pattern occasionally differing from that of the opponent, or with both singers performing a duet.

Each week, the player can choose between three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty level increases, the speed of the incoming arrows increases, as do the patterns of the arrows. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty level is tracked and displayed in the week selection screen's top corner. The game features two distinct modes of play: a story campaign in which songs are played sequentially and a "free play" mode in which any of the game's music tracks can be selected at random.
